Out of the Abyss
Hrothgaard of Icewind Dale
Leed in da morning, it'll be bedda.
Hrothgaard of Icewind Dale grew up on his tribes cold, harsh, lands, between the Reghed Glacier and the Sea of Moving Ice, as a semi-nomadic barbarian. Hrothgaard grew up tall and strong like all of his people, but with striking steel-grey eyes unlike the typical Reghedmen blue.
In the time before Hrothgaard became a man in his tribe’s eyes, evil peoples from the south came to his village, killing everyone and razing it to the ground. They overwhelmed the barbarians with superior numbers, evil magics, and cowardly surprise. Hrothgaard was left for dead, the sole survivor of the massacre. After collecting the people of his village into a mass pyre, he burnt their corpses so that they could be with their god Tempos, and know some semblance of peace in the afterlife.
Gathering what supplies he could, Hrothgaard made his way across the glacier, finding sympathy amongst the other Reghedmen Tribes, but not a home. He stopped in Ten Towns for a spell, meeting Bruenor Battlehammer, who took a liking to the young barbarian. Bruenor proved to be just the surrogate father figure Hrothgaard needed (a job Bruenor was well experienced in). Hrothgaard travelled with Bruenor for some time, helping his dwarven clan reclaim Gauntlgrym, at a very high price in blood.
You know the dwarf hold of Gauntlgrym well, having fought alongside the dwarves to help reclaim it. King Bruenor Battlehammer congratulated you on your valor, and you know the price the dwarves paid in blood to regain their home. (Bond)
It was during this dark campaign, under the tutelage of Bruenor, that Hrothgaard came to accept his fate, and returned to being the good person he was raised to be.
Greater Good. It is each person’s responsibility to make the most happiness for the whole tribe. (Good) (Ideal)
It was also during this time that Hrothgaard watched as the wealthy and well-mannered fell to violence, all the while holding on to their precious sense of self. He realized that sometimes it took rough men, willing to do violence, to survive.
I place no stock in wealthy or well-mannered folk. Money and manners won’t save you from a hungry owlbear. (Personality Trait)
In time, Hrothgaard left Bruenor’s side to pursue his own way in the world, now considering himself a child of Icewind Dale, as the Caribou Tribe is no more.
While he still lives in accordance with his tribes beliefs, and still considers the trappings of civilization a weakness of man, Hrothgaard harbours no resentment towards it, knowing that both good and evil exist in all places. He considers the individual, not the society that created the individual. For this reason, Hrothgaard takes great personal stock in both his allies and enemies, never forgetting a friend, but especially never forgetting an enemy.
I remember every insult I’ve received and nurse a silent resentment toward anyone who’s ever wronged me. (Flaw)
Hrothgaard considers his new found adventuring party a group of like-minded, honourable people, that would not stand for the kind of destruction brought upon his tribe. With that respect comes a natural protectiveness and feeling of family. Hrothgaard will not stand by as his new tribe comes to any harm, and will lay down his life to protect them.
I watch over my friends as if they were a litter of newborn pups. (Personality trait)
